The Breathtaking Island of Aphrodite The beauty of the island of Cyprus, which is the birthplace of Aphrodite, the Goddess of Beauty, is recorded in Greek Mythology by Homer in two of his books: "The Iliad" and "The Odyssey". Apart from myths, the island also carries over 9,000 years of a truly rich and dramatic history. It is an island that over these years has been dominated by various conquerors, some of whom included the ancient Greeks, Egyptians, Romans, Byzantines and Franks. This was due to the fact that the island of Cyprus was considered to have had a very advantageous geographic location as it is situated in the eastern corner of the Mediterranean. Hence, it was a meeting place for people from the continents of Asia, Africa and Europe. Mythology and history have left the island with an admirable legacy and culture for visitors to observe.
